CONNEMARA PONY, an original fine art charcoal drawing, is a lovely study I took time to do of a beautiful breed of horse that has its origins in Connemara, Ireland. I was quite taken by a photo reference of this pure white horse (reference kindly provided by Karen Broemmelsick) and was immediately reminded of the wild Irish ponies because of the white coat color which is a breed standard of these ponies. I wanted to give tribute to these fine little horses that are much like our American wild horses of the Outer Banks and the Assateague and Chincoteague Islands. All of these wild horses have descended from the Spanish horses and have thrived on their own for many years before becoming domesticated. I also learned that the Connemara region of Ireland is reputed to be the most beautiful area of the emerald isle and I have added this to my bucket list as a place I have to visit. Connemara's have beautiful lines, high intelligence and natural athleticism which speaks of their ancestry and breeding. They were originally descended from the Spanish horses and Andalusians and were later bred with both Arabian and Thoroughbred stock making this horse both incredibly versatile and particularly suited to sporting, shows, dressage and jumping. So, as fate may have it, my sketch brought me friends from the Emerald Isle who breed, raise and sell the ponies, CLOUNANNA CONNEMARA PONIES and a very special magical horse who is a white Connemara pony living in Germany, MATHILDATHEHORSE. Mathilda is a therapy horse, and her photos are filled with her remarkable warmth and fun-loving personality. Her owner has shared with me a few of Mathilda's stories of healing and rehabilitation which touched my heart and made this sketch a very personal favorite for me.

CONNEMARA PONY is definitely a softer charcoal sketch in tone and value. I sought to evoke a feeling of pride and reverence that speaks of the heritage of the horse. I also wanted that special magic to flow through my work and cause a viewer to be curious about the breed and delighted to find the special beauty of these ponies just as I did.
