UNBROKEN is an award winning charcoal sketch of what I wanted to show as wild, mustang stallion. The reference I used (kindly provided by Karen Broemmelsick) immediately caught my attention due to the violent movement in the stallion's tangled mane suggesting the movement of the horse to me. As any reference I have ever used, my mind develops a composition or visual story around the image or images and this beautiful equine was to me a powerful, untamable, forever unbroken spirit. My style is always to use charcoal to create strong contrasts and rich detail while still maintaining that soft, signature mark of the drawing medium. I fell in love with this work of art knowing well that horse lovers would immediately respond to the energy in this piece. I can see this young stallion as a grey or a buckskin coveted by the local cowboys. Only the rider who speaks to the heart of this horse can hope to gallop the plains on his back. As the horse emerged on my paper, so did his story. For now, he will remain free and unbroken.
